ATL Airport in the 1980's

http://www.sunshineskies.com/atlanta...-terminal.html

I found this site that was posted on another aviation message board. It is quite interesting and has a lot of history of the current ATL terminal complex that opened in 1981. However, I noticed that American, United, Continental, and TWA are not listed on the terminal maps. Did AA, UA, CO, and TWA not serve ATL in the 1980's or is it a mistake?

Lol, with as little traffic as this board receives I'll have a better chance of inventing a time machine and go back to 1981 myself than getting an answer. Thanks anyway.

Go through the entire website as it details the entry/exit of TWA and UAL in the market.

Great link, thanks for sharing it!

The answer to your question is buried deep in the website. For United (as an example): United left the Atlanta market in 1979 but returned in the mid 1980s.

The new terminal was practical and needed and a trend-setter, but architecturally pretty plain compared to the old one, which had echoes from that Jetsons period that you also saw in places like IAD, STL and some of the old JFK.

Being able to remember the old terminal is almost as old-timey a thing for Atlantans as the Pink Pig at Rich's or the Darlington sign at under 1,000,000 or Chief Noc-a-Homa and the tepee or I-285 when it had a grass median.

Besides the main building, the old terminal spread out octopus-like with the gates, basically ensuring the design wasn't sustainable. Whereas with the new one they've been able to add concourses ahead of demand and still have an arrangement where you can get from any gate to any gate without having to go through security.
