Effect of Air Force One on PBI Palm Beach Intl airport

Starting a thread to share ideas on frequent flyer planning around the closures to PBI when Air Force One arrives and departs during Presidential visits to Mar-a-Lago or other sites in Palm Beach County.

PBI "closes" for a period of time both after landing and before takeoff of Air Force One. The President and Japanese PM Abe landed around 5pm on Friday Feb. 10, and they departed at 5:30pm on Sunday.

My Sunday flight, the AA 4:58pm PBI-ORD was, according to the captain, "the last departure before the Secret Service closed the airport for 45 minutes." The crew prodded us during boarding, and we were wheels-up at 4:59pm, just as the Presidential motorcade was heading toward PBI on Southern Boulevard.

The previous Sunday, Trump stayed at Mar-a-Lago rather late into the evening for the Superbowl, so it didn't impact PBI as much. But if Air Force One departs Sundays around 5pm, then several PBI flights to hubs on network carriers may regularly misconnect -- CLT, DCA and ORD on AA plus DL flights to ATL and LGA and UA flights to EWR.
