Two new-ish restaurants to consider in the Uptown area. Both are in the 4100 block of Magazine St., across the street from each other. Both are BYOB. Ive enjoyed meals at both places.
Saj - Mediterranean/Middle Eastern
Pomelo - Thai street food

Hey FLYMSY, I just drove past CK Hot Shoppe last night on my way to Bayou Bar and THEY HAVE RE-OPENED!!! New sign on the building, “We’re Open” banner on the door, yay! It’s at the corner of Baronne & MLK. If you like Pinoy food, check it out.

I know this is irrational, especially since I've always enjoyed their donuts, sliders, and coffee, but District has lost its luster with me a bit now that they're up to seven locations, including Las Vegas. Which doesn't stop me from stopping in when I happen to see one and have a hankering.

With that said, I am not a fan of District, or Blue Dot Donuts. Waaaay overpriced and too heavy! They are obviously successful and I wish them all the best, but they just dont appeal to me. Each to his own. Its good to have choices.

We hadn't been back to NOLA since before Katrina, and so we decided to retry several of the more famous restaurants we knew from the past. Here's a quick summary based on one dinner with four people.
Commander's Palace. As good or better than ever. All four of us felt our meal, start to finish, was the best we had of our three dinners. Both fish and meat entrees were excellent, appetizers were outstanding, and the bread pudding souffle still may be the best dessert we have ever had, anytime, anywhere. And the atmosphere and service were wonderful. Don't miss it.
Arnauds. Surprisingly still good - the fish in particular. Service a little snooty, as expected, but at least not rude, as we have had at some of the old timers like Galatoire's and Antoine's. Not sure we'd go back, but not sorry we went.
Emeril's. The big disappointment of the trip. No one really happy with their entree - nothing wrong but definitely nothing special about any of the four dishes. The cauliflower salad was good and the Napolean dessert good, everything else just OK. Definitely off the list for any future trip. This was a big surprise, since it had been #1 for us in the past.

Should Brennan's be on the list for brunch? They already have a reservation for Sunday brunch at Commander's Palace. I was not impressed with my last dinner at Brennan's but that was 20-30 years ago.
Also I see mixed reports on the drinking age. My son is 16, will he be permitted to enter bars on Bourbon Street under parental supervision?

Some family members will be visiting for the first time and need some dinner recommendations. They want the traditional experience, so I would typically recommend Arnauds, Galatoire's or Antione's. Wondering if they are still high quality in the post-pandemic era? Nb. I am not a big Emeril fan so he's off my list.

What part of the city will they be staying in and for how many days?
It seems like from your post, they are mostly interested in restaurants in the FQ? True, or not?
I’ve had many, many meals at Antoine’s (had my own waiter, for those who understand how Antoine’s works), however, earlier this year the food was terrible. A few years ago, they had a change in management, lost a lot of their old, very experienced waitstaff and it just hasn’t been the same. I won’t be going back anytime soon, if ever. Really sad. Therefore, in the FQ, I’d go with Arnaud’s, Galatoire’s or, even better, Bayona, Pelican Club or Redfish Grill. A little more casual, I’d even throw in Palace Cafe on Canal St.
Your last experience at Brennan’s was at least 3-4 chefs ago and under different ownership. It’s a long story, but it involves different branches of the Brennan family and the inherent dynamics of such. Brennan’s is now owned by Dickie Brennan and his restaurant group. I’d probably keep the Sunday brunch reservation at Commander’s.
Can’t help with advice on 16 year olds in bars. Maybe call one of the bars and ask.
One thing for sure, they won’t lack for choices of restaurants.

I would send them to the bar at Pelican Club for sure. Its just a really cool space, the drinks are well mixed and strong, and the bartenders are just what they should be.
My guess would be no in most places, certainly not at night. But I dont have kids, so I dont really know.

If the bar has poker machines, then by law under-21 are not allowed.
If not, then it's up to the establishment. In general, though, it's more likely to be allowed at places that also serve food.
