This is quite nice for connections in PEK and in JNB on the arriving end, but the JNB departure is a bit early in the day for people to connect from anywhere except domestic flights. It is too bad though that SA was never able to get similar time slots, that flight was no good for anyone going beyond China, while the HKG flight is timed quite well for onward connections to Korea, Japan, Taiwan, etc. Although the equipment is newer (for now) on CA and the seats are better (premium cabins at least), I'd still prefer to fly on SA, the service and food on CA is sub par in my experience.

You would manage connections from Lagos, Douala, Libreville, Sao Paulo, Maputo, Harare, Manzini, Lusaka, Gaborone, Windhoek and Entebbe at the very least. Possibly also Kinshasa, Abidjan and Accra on some days.

so presumably the situation would be slightly better if SA were offering the NRT-HKG sector as well, hopefully getting into HKG before the last Airport Express train runs.

:D lol you'd think a company like SA would care about whether its customers could take some sort of train?

They care enough to have their flight arrive in HKG at midday, and depart before midnight, just fine for the train.

My comment was actually a jab at ET who recently set up a 5th Freedom sector on that route. Their flight from NRT arrives in HKG at 2:30am. Granted not many people are using it as a HKG flight, but it's not a very good arrival time for those who do.

If SA were to add a 5th Freedom flight to NRT/HND then it'd be much better timed for public transportation if they kept the HKG times similar to the current schedule.

this was by chance and not because saa (like any south african company) lacks contempt for its customers
