I know, but it seems they need the A332 someplace else to compensate.

Interesting to see if it is being flown on other routes in the coming days.

My concern is sort the hodgepodge nature of all this. The just-announced flight cancellations are only through at the latest, 24 January. I haven't been tracking which metal is being flown on certain routes, sold, returned, re-purposed. If they were going to continue to cut costs by cutting routes dumping planes/leases, just cancel the route, full stop, and getting rid of the metal (or using it on another route) rather than saying, in substance, "this week" we're cancelling these flights. What will it be next week? Markets (to the extent there's a "market" for SAA) like certainty and I'm sure pax would appreciate it as well. With these recent cancellations, are they saying a JNB_MUC flights next week may go on as planned, or not?

I'll quote my post from the IAD-JNB fuel stop thread since its somewhat relevant. My flight was changed to an A340 four months in advance. Its usually a dedicated A330 route (with occasional last min A340 subs)

I'm just curious as to why the route seems to be moving from a dedicated A330 route, to one where they are adding some A340's. Is it because they are putting the new A350s on JFK-JNB, and they are redeploying the old A340s elsewhere?

A quick look at May 2020 shows they have already switched to a A340 30% of the time. Seems pretty random, but I'm sure there's logic behind it.

What happens when a flight is cancelled? Does saa rebook you to another flight of their choice, or pass the buck to the travel agency?

Am on a March JNB-HKG flight which I'm 99 percent sure is on the chopping block. They're still selling tickets but only on higher fare buckets and is therefore mostly unsold

And several regional/international gone as well - Abidjan, Entebbe, Luanda, Ndola, along with Hong Kong, Munich and Sao Paulo. Brutal indeed!

Official announcement here - which includes 'SAA does not intend to make any further significant network changes. Passengers and travel agents can therefore feel confident about booking future travel with South African Airways.' !

Airlink has posted an announcement about the domestic and regional flights.

Airlink, the privately-run South African airline, will operate services linking Johannesburg with Port Elizabeth, Entebbe, Ndola and Luanda after 29 February 2020, even though its franchise partner, SAA, will stop serving those destinations from that date.

“We want to reassure travellers that as far as Airlink is concerned, it is business as usual! Our schedule and operations are unaffected by SAA’s latest network cuts,” said Rodger Foster, Airlink CEO and Managing Director.

Airlink has been operating flights to Entebbe, Uganda on SAA’s behalf and will continue these services without disruption after 29 February 2020.

Currently Airlink operates two flights a day to Ndola, Zambia, which will allow travellers booked on SAA’s own flights to be re-accommodated on Airlink after 29 February 2020 with no interruption.

Airlink recently secured traffic rights to operate daily direct flights to Luanda, Angola. It will commence this service after 29 February.

“Our flights will operate under the “SA8” flight code until 10 June 2020, after which they will be operated under Airlink’s unique “4Z” code. “4Z” tickets are already available through travel agents, tour operators and online at www.flyairlink.com,” added Mr Foster.

Tickets already issued for travel on SAA flight numbers on these routes, after 29 February 2020, will remain valid, subject to re-accommodation by Airlink. Customers holding those tickets may apply to SAA for re-accommodation onto Airlink’s flights. Those who do not want to be re-accommodated, may apply to SAA for a refund in line with its Business Rescue refund policies.
