Garuda is coming

From Garuda Indonesia's website:

As founder of the “Skyteam” airline alliance, Korean Air has also signaled its endorsement of Garuda Indonesia’s intention to become a member of the alliance. To date, Skyteam airline members include Aeroflot, Aero Mexico, KLM/Air France, Alitalia China Southern, Continental Airlines, Czech Airlines, Delta Airlines, Korean Air, Northwest Airlines, Air Europe, Copa Airlines and Kenya Airways.

According to Emirsyah Satar, Garuda Indonesia has set its sight on becoming a four star airline by 2009 and a five star airline by the following year. To this end, Garuda Indonesia has never ceased improving the performance of various aspects in the organization, including areas of operations and service. “And by entering the Skyteam alliance we are closer to achieving our targets”, he added.

What a choice... Garuda is on the list of banned carriers in the EU:

Northwest use to have ties with the airline with a partnership with the frequent flier program. This was cut when safety issues became a problem with the Indonesian airlines....

Pleased to see that Skyteam is maintaining quality standards in the alliance through the addition of members such as Garuda....

Aeroflot is streets ahead of the Indonesian carriers. The NWA website says it has suspended its relationships with both Garuda and Cebu Air for safety concerns.

This hardly improves SkyTeam's lackluster profile in Asia.

I think I read recently that all Indonesian airlines are still banned by the EU. Is that correct?

Cheers

Pilots who crash on purpose?

While I agree with almost everything that has been written in FT about Garuda in the past few days, I don't think one should make such claim lightly.

Can you please calm down?
Is Garuda a good airline? Probably not.
Was Aeroflot a good airline 12 years ago? Probably not.
Was RO a marvellous airline 7 years ago? Probably not.
Is RO getting in better shape (in terms of equipment, services as well as financials)? Sure.
How long has it been since Tarom was first announced as a potential Skyteam member? 5 years? Have they joined yet?

Do the math...

Hope it won't happen but it does ST will be once again downgraded with a terrific level...

But I wonder why it's an avantage for ST pax ? AFAIK their network is not worldwide ?

No MH, no 9W, no middle east carriers ..

A good airline is still lacking on ST.

Not only Aeroflot is light years ahead of Garuda, its is also light years ahead of any European airlines for intra-European flights in terms of service levelsin C and usually better in Y. And very much on par with any European airline for long-haul (not to mention actually better then US-based carriers in both C and Y for long and short haul). Have you ever actually flown SU to make this comment or heard it from a friend whose uncle met a girl whose mom heard a story from her coworker who read it somewhere?

They're compiled by an organisation called Skytrax:

Garuda currently has 3 stars.
