Will Alitalia be joing Skyteam

As with CSA and SU, AF is open to cooperation talks with Alitalia. "We have no discussions now," AF's Spinetta told Reuters. "Alitalia has to decide (whom to talk to). Three years ago we had discussions with Alitalia. Everybody knows that Air France thinks cooperation with Alitalia could make sense," he said.

While SkyTeam is expected to be joined by Czech Airlines, CSA, next March, rumours of Alitalia persist.

CSA will give the new alliance a central European hub at Prague which could lead to AF taking an equity stake in the Czech carrier. The Czech government, which owns 88%of CSA, is considering allowing a strategic investor to take a 38% stake.

CSA's entry into Sky Team would seemingly make AF, which took a 19% stake in 1992 but sold it back in 1994 after a dispute with CSA's management, a favored partner.

From AVIATION DAILY -- July 5, 2000:

"SkyTeam partners may be courting Alitalia for possible membership in the alliance following Alitalia's recent breakup with KLM. 'If Alitalia would be desiring at least a conversation, we would be willing to have that conversation,' Delta CEO Leo Mullin told the DAILY recently. Alitalia has many options, he noted, but SkyTeam believes the shakeup in the so-called Wings alliance 'clearly has created a situation for a further step.'"

The results came as Air France confirmed it is in talks with Alitalia over the Italian airline's entry into the SkyTeam alliance.

"Alitalia interests us and I think it is mutual," said Mr Spinetta. Mr Spinetta said a tie-up with Alitalia would allow Air France and its existing partners, including Delta of the US, to benefit from Alitalia's "many assets" and access the lucrative business flight market in northern Italy.

Alitalia, the Italian national carrier, is on the verge of forging a strategic alliance with Air France in a move that could lead to the airlines taking mutual stakes.

Italian government officials said on Sunday that Alitalia was in advanced talks with Air France over a commercial agreement.

Francesco Mengozzi, the airline's recently appointed chief executive, was committed to completing the accord before an Alitalia shareholder meeting at the end of next month.

A renewed bout of speculation over Alitalia's future emerged on Sunday after Italian daily La Repubblica reported Enrico Micheli, undersecretary to prime minister Giuliano Amato, as saying that a strategic accord with Air France was "almost complete".

Media reports have said an accord with Air France could also see Alitalia join the Skyteam airlines alliance with U.S. carrier Delta Air Lines Inc. (NYSE AL - news).

Air France on Tuesday confirmed it was holding talks with Alitalia, saying negotiations had continued for some time and only stopped briefly when Mengozzi replaced former CEO Domenico Cempella.
