double ticket + baggage question
 

Was looking at airfares from NYC-PRG, for early August. Prices are $1000+ (as I expected). Found & took advantage of the great price ($401 including taxes) on CO from EWR-BRS. Then I booked KL BRS-AMS-PRG (For $195 including taxes). Just saved several hundred dollars.

My question is: Can I check in my luggage at Newark all the way to Prague, or will I have to claim in Bristol & recheck it. Anybody know??

It's an all-Skyteam itin, just two airlines and two connections....Can't imagine it being a problem. You obviously don't have to clear customs before PRG, either.
I guess that's a bit late for you now, but if I were you (and assuming you are not interested in collecting segments) I'd fly OK from BHX. The latter is less than 100 miles away from BRS and offers two nonstops to PRG by CSA and probably a couple of others by lo-cos every day.

thank you for the advice, yeah it's a little late now since I booked the tickets already. Something to keep in mind for next time. Just didn't want to pay $1000+ for JFKorEWR-PRG. \

Praying for nice weather & no delays (but then again al flights from Newark are delayed) :)

The way I read this, you have two separate tickets. If that is the case, you can have any one of a number of problems.

1. you have two weight allowances. 2x32kg to BRS, and whatever KL's european allowance is for the rest of the way.

2. If your luggage gets lost on the way to BRS, the airline is not required to transfer it to KL.

3. CO does not have to book the luggage through, and may not.

As long as nboth tickets are in hand, they are all ST and you should have no problem whatsoever in checking them through.

Plan on traveling light. :)

I did the same thing a few weeks ago. flying AM from MEx to CDG with one ticket. thenflyinf with AF from CDH to ZRH with a dfiirerent ticket.(saved 600 usd that way).
I had two very heavy pieces of luggage, when i asked the agent that checked me in she had to ask a supervisor to do it. it gets a little tricky but they fir sure can do it for you.
Normally in europe the weigh limitations are more strict than the long flights from the us to europe. As long you comply with CO, KLM should pick your bags in Europe and transfer them to the next flight to Prague with no problem.\
If the agent at the counter gives you a hard time ask to talk with a supervisor. and they have to do it. is aprt of the SKY TEAM ALLIANCE!!!

As long as the two airlines have an interline baggage agreement, there would be no problem even if they are not a part of the same alliance. I have done this many many times. If you are transferring to the other airline wihin 24 hours even different baggae rules are not a problem. It's possible one may run into an agent who would try to squueze some cash from one. But if one is fir, confident and polite, that can be overcome too.
