DL must be just "thrilled" with their AF arrangement

French national carrier AF cancelled half its flights from Paris' Charles de Gaulle and Orly airports Friday as stewards and air hostesses went on strike. This strike was expected to continue through Saturday.

Six trade unions called the strike to protest management proposals concerning the number of vacation days to be awarded to employees under a law to shorten the working week. France's "left-of-center" government had passed a controversial law cutting the working week from 39 hours to 35. The law is a centerpiece of its drive to create jobs, but many business leaders are fiercely opposed to the measure. They say it is expensive and smacks of government interference in the economy. Trade unions in different sectors have also opposed elements of the implementation of the law.

Companies with more than 20 staffers were required to implement the policy on as of this past Feb. 1, but businesses with fewer than 20 employees have until January 2002.

Great! More fun coming your way
