Can't get assigned seats on partner airlines when booked through Delta.com

I booked a couple of flights last year through Delta.com and paid for Premium Economy as the actual flights were managed by partner airlines. An example was when we booked under the Delta website and Virgin Atlantic was the carrier. When we checked-in with Virgin, they said the booked seats did not transfer to Virgin and they had to just give us what they had. This was upsetting as my wife and I wanted specific seats. This again happened another time that our seat reservations were not transferred from the Delta booking to the partner carrier.

Is this normal? If so, it basically discourages me to book with Delta if the flight is with another partner airlines. I mainly prefer to book via Delta as I believe I accumulate MQMs whereas I won't if say, I book with Virgin directly. Apologies if I'm missing something. I'm new to these processes. Thank for any feedback!

Were these codeshares (DL flight number) or the operating airlines flight number?
Just try to select seats on the operating airlines web site (not DL web site).

I'm not familiar with what the old rules were for SkyMiles accrual on VS flights, but FYI that as of last year, all that matters is the marketing carrier. Further, if MQDs are relevant for you (i.e. not MQD exempt via credit card waiver or foreign residence) then you should check potential flights against the earning chart at

https://www.delta.com/en_US/skymiles...rline-partners

as in some cases you may earn more MQDs booking VS-coded flights vs. DL depending on distance traveled vs. fare paid.

You might need the VS PNR (which you should be able to get from a DL phone agent or Twitter) to do so.

I recently booked a flight to Japan and my normal route was not available for some reason (ATL-DTW-NGO). My route this time is ATL-ICN-NGO and I'm flying KE for the first time. The flight numbers are coded DL.
I was assigned a seat way in the back and could not chose a better seat from the DL website. I called the DM line and they were able to get me a better seat. I'm not sure if KE has C+ or something similar. Plus, I'm not sure what benefits I get with KE as a DM.
