Heartland

I understand “heartland” is the term used in Singapore for the areas outside the main business/tourist zone. Having been to Singapore many times but never ventured beyond that zone, I am very much hoping to explore the “heartland” on an upcoming visit.

Any advice on where to go and how to go about it much appreciated.

You might find these useful:

https://www.hdb.gov.sg/community/cre...eartland-spots

I'd suggest downloading the App mentioned in the second web site.

Can I ask whether nature / wild life or walking / hikes are of any interest to you?

Thank you Midships. These are excellent resources.

I am principally interested in trying to see what daily life is like in these towns - not so much a nature / hiking focus.

I suppose going to the main mall in a selection of towns and walking around the neighborhoods and seeing the community services is the simplest but perhaps not the most rewarding ?

I’ve seen some private tours offering visits to HDB estates but they seem to be rather expensive !

Good luck with it, my knowledge of the Heartlands is fairly limited, I went up to Ang Mo Kio every week for about a year for my covid PCR tests, other than that, my knowledge is mostly from the upper deck of a bus passing through them to say the Changi ferry terminal to go out to Pulau Ubin, an island in the Johor Strait which is as close to an original Kampong as I think you'll find. I think outside of your wish list, but here's a link anyway:

You may find this of interest, which is close to Geylang where we live:

Tiong Bahru is technically Heartlands i the process of gentrification and being "hip" (sorry hate that word), and is one of the 9oldest housing estates in Singapore.

Good luck.

They're maily big housing estates where people go to sleep, and that's mainly it. There are a few exceptions such as Changi Village, parts of Seng Kang or Pasir Ris, Pulau Urbin obviously.

Take MRT to Puggol, get out and wander - this is relatively new development with new HDB estates.

If you want older ones, Khatib, Pasir Ris, Clementi, Yushin can be as alternative.

Is there anything in particular you want to see? That will help to decide which "heartland" you want/should go? You dont want to end up somewhere just to see rows and rows of identicial goverment residencial buildings.

basically the heartland is where Singaporeans stay. these estates are usually self sufficient, so you can find amenities ranging from schools, shops, markets, hawker centers, sports/community facilities, shopping malls, etc. there isnt really much to see, but i guess if you want to get a feel of the environment Singaporeans live in. nonetheless, i would recommend going to wet markets and hawker centers to look for interesting local eats. you can consider visiting tiong bahru market area. it has a wet market and the hawker center on level 2 has quite a lot of good food. the area around the market also has a nostalgic heritage charm, as it is one of the oldest public housing estate.

I just posted something on YouTube
.

This is from the older estate of Whampoa, focusing on the breakfast hawker area and the wet market.

Unfortunately I didn't visit the dinner market area. There are also lots of mamak shops, laundry, health clinics and massage store.

If you're interested in more of these videos, let me know and I'll try to take some if I am able to.

Queenstown used to be (decades ago) the really rough part of Singapore. Rarely ventured to except by those who lives there.

As for kampongs, there's still one left. Kampong Lorong Buangkok

Punggol

Some pictures from my visit to Punggol on the north coast. This is a new community with endless tall residential towers and a nice modern mall and metro/bus hub at its core. Lots of young
families and children there with many recreational facilities geared towards them.

Toa Payoh

I also visited the ToaPayoh community, more in the center of the island. This is an established community, a significantly older population profile. It has more mature buildings and facilities. But a lot of character to the community.
