I just read on a Japanese newspaper website, asahi.com that nearly 20% of the restaurants in Singapore are Japanese restaurants. Is it true? How come they are so popular?

Singaporeans seem to like ramen and sushi quite a bit.
Most of the Japanese restaurants are of these two types.
They also charge a lot, compared to Tokyo.

There is also a very large Japanese expat community in Singapore.

However, not sure what they define by restaurants, if it includes food court stalls or restaurants mean "stand alone type".
If it is just "stand alone type" restaurants, then maybe 20% but I still think it is a high number.
