Happy National Day Singapore! 9 Aug 2016

Singapore celebrates her 51st National Day today, 9th Aug 2016. We are 51 years old, having gained independence in 1965. Happy National Day!

This video was taken recently from a high floor in an office building in the relatively new Marina Bay Financial Centre, our new downtown. Look how far we have come! We have a vision for tomorrow, just believe, just believe!

On National Day morning, I go out to a local coffeeshop and have a nice bowl of noodles. Food, awesome food! Majulah Singapura!

Well, 1957 surely? That's when Singapore became independent.

'65 is when you split from the Malayan Federation. So, yes, it is 51 yesr of Singapore, but not 51 years of Singapore independence...

The federation was set up when the British left, as a group of former colonies.

Get the record straight from Singapore and Malaysia: Singapore's independence was force by an "expulsion" form the federation due to Malay interest.

Well Singapore has been out of the UK for more than 51 years, but has only been an independent nation (i.e. not part of any other nation including Malaysia) since 1965. The event you refer to in 1957 was when the Federation of Malaysia became independent from the British - incorporating Malaya (the old name for what is now called peninsular Malaysia) as well as Singapore, Sabah and Sarawak.
