I went to Red House Restaurant recently, along Robertson Quay for Chilli Crab with Mantou. Very tasty. Service was a little chaotic, but we didn't mind.

I loved the ceiling fans that looked like giant plane propellors!

Highly recommended overall if anyone is near, or would like to try a different place.

Most are overpriced, targets tourists and for business meal. Need to go to more casual places. One is at 41 Keong Saik Road, a Chinese restaurant. Only $30 for 3 crabs.

In terms of overpriced - yes. In terms of colorful atmosphere - just right.

I do take my visiting friends (including females) on a walking tour around Lor 6-14 after 8PM on weekends. Part of cultural experience. Nobody complained yet.

Bumping an old thread. I've got a stopover in SIngapore coming up that will allow me to introduce my wife to chilli crab. Previously I've been to Jumbo on the East Coast, but I would prefer somewhere downtown or accessible by MRT. Good quality, happy with casual dining, fair price.

Thanks.

Hmm casual dining and fair price for Chilli Crab is difficult... especially if you add downtown
But you could try these outlets:
No Sign Board at Clark Quay
Jumbo Seafood Riverside

These are both chains

I'm a chilli crab eater in Mosque Street. I know it's not downtown.

Mosque Street is good. I’ve heard of Momma Kong’s.

Chilli crab is one of the things I associate Singapore with as I do not think anyone else does it better. Seafood restaurants like Jumbo, Red House and No Signboard has been mentioned and I think they are all great and accessible. Even growing up in Singapore, I would not say no to Chilli crab from these places. Eating chilli crab takes time and is not cheap so probably not a daily thing to eat for Singaporeans, though when I was studying overseas, I missed this dish so much I actually learned to cook it using live dungeness crab. For those keen to try cooking it themselves, a Singaporean food company Prima Taste sells a good variation of the sauce and they should be available in a good Asian supermarket in North America/Europe.

Otherwise the main attraction for eating chilli crabs is the deep fried mantou (plain dumplings) that are ordered with the dish to scoop up the sauce. To me, this is why chilli crab is as enjoyable as black pepper crabs.
