- You won't like Peninsula Excelsior, because it's somewhat dated.
- You won't like the IC either because it is decorated in ethnic Peranakan style (not modern)
- Anything more modern and closer to City Hall after the Singapore River would be out of your budget.
- Anything in the Marina Bay area is out of your budget.
- AMOY is built in old shop houses, I don't think the rooms would be very big.

The Chinatown area would be your best bet, imo...

I think you still can consider HIX CQ. It's actually not a bad location and with the current opening specials, you might be able to snag a good rate. There's free breakfast too and while it's not a full spread, you do get a pretty decent selection.

Other hotels off the top of my head at that area - Park Regis, Park Hotel Clarke Quay (further from the MRT than HIX CQ), HIX CQ

I'm currently staying at the HIX CQ - 14 night stay, 3 rooms - and couldn't recommend the hotel enough. Its 3 weeks old, housekeeping still needs to sort itself out, but the location is fantastic, rooms whilst small have a spacious feel due to the extremely high ceilings/full length windows, and the gym and pool is good enough too for laps and daily exercise. Breakfast is consistent, and they offer premium teas.

I usually stay at the Holiday Inn Orchard - but this will be my new go to hotel in Singapore. Excellent value stay.

Thanks for that. Some reviews of the HIX CQ that I have seen complained about long waits and big crowds in the lobby. I guess it is already popular with tour groups? Some one also complained about the distance to the subway but having walked all over that part of town when I was there I can't imagine it is that far of a walk.

I still haven't made a choice yet but your views may certainly help me to decide.

There is now an ongoing thread for HIX Clarke Quay. Just wanted to mention since I have now stayed there, that I recommend the place for the location, however, must caution about the water pressure in the room which was lacking...

I recently stayed at the Carlton City Hotel and it was amazing! Great views from the room and an overall good experience.
