This might have been discussed but I need to know how it works if I fly on SQ in economy and I am a Star Alliance Gold do they upgrade automatically if Economy is oversold ?

They have been known to do that during the odd blue moon. But *A gold ranks pretty low in SQ though. If they went through a list by status they'd go something like this:

1. Solitaire PPS life
2. Solitaire PPS
3. PPS
4. Krisflyer Elite Gold
5. Star Gold
6. Krisflyer Elite Silver
7. Star Silver
8. I guess KF blue
9. Any other Star base level

I wouldn't count on it if I were you.

I'm PPS and I've never been OpUped on SQ. I saw it happen to a Solitaire once.

I think the saying goes if you want to fly in Business/First either buy/award the ticket but don't expect to get a freebie (op-up).

There's a thread started some time ago listing the times forummers have been upgraded, or even "witnessed" op-upgrades in progress. Suffice to say, the thread isn't very long!

As PPS, I've only been upgraded once or twice. Then again, I fly mostly J so I don't really have many opportunities for upgrades. When I fly Y it's usually the SIN-KUL route which is chock full of Solitaires anyway.

I've only gotten one op-up from Y to J on an oversold flight....at the time I was a Krisflyer Elite Silver and was upgraded ahead of at least one Star Gold who was on the same flight in Y.

PPS for 4 years. And *G on both UA and SQ (at the time). not one op upgrade.

Want to fly J? Paying for it is one sure way.

Op-ugrade on SQ for a non-SQ *gold....keep dreaming.
Sorry, but it will not be very likely to happen.
If you want to fly J then buy a J ticket....works for me every time ;)
and got a op-up to F once too!

From Economy to Business, chances are rare for a Star Gold to be Op-Up as there are many many other PPS ahead of you, and SQ hardly ever over-sells.

The only time I've seen it happen and to me even, was from J to F. That was about 8 years ago, and when I was Star Gold and not PPS.

Actually, there is one level ABOVE Solitair PPS Life and that is VIP and Heads of State!

Plus on any given flight, almost 25% of the economy class cabin is filled with PPS alone. So a Star Gold would be quite low on the priority list.

But Star Gold didn't matter at that time, right? (SQ was not in Star Alliance)
You were very very lucky!

A couple of years ago, I was upgraded at the gate from SYD-SIN from Y to J. Was travelling on a cheap web fare and flying stand-by. I had been cleared onto the flight at the check-in counter about 45 mins prior to departure. When I got to the gate, I heard my name being announced and was afraid they were going to take my seat back, but no ... they traded by Economy Class boarding pass for a Raffles Class boarding pass. :)

Was a UA *G at the time!
