Foreign transaction fee

Guys - when purchasing tickets on theri website with a US credit card, would it incur foreign transaction fees? I am using a Chase Business Unlimited that charges 3%

Part B - what's the likelihood if I list my United account for crediting earned miles to for my kids? Obviously only last name will match

Thanks

Depends on the currency the purchase is in. If they don't process the payment in US$, then your paying that 3%

Kids - no chance I would say.

Not sure about Singapore, but most sites use the currency of the original departure city. So if you book US-Singapore, currency is USD. If you start the trip in Singapore, then Singapore dollars are used and if your card charges a fee, it would apply.

As for child, no harm in creating a FF account for them and accruing over time. Some airlines allow transfers between accounts or family accounts.

Ok if anybody has experience purchasing USA departure flights and see if the 3% was charged, that would be great

Why don't you do a dummy booking and if it's quoted in USD then you won't have to pay the fee.

Ex-US tickets are priced in USD. The foreign transaction fee will depend on the card issuer of your card, if the home currency of your card is not USD. It sounds like your Chase card is US-based, so I don’t see why you would be charged a FTF in the first place, seeing as you would be paying in your home currency.

Part B - Better ask that question in the United forum, you should have a higher chance of finding data points there.

No FTF for SQ ticket departing from the US using a US credit card.

I have done this on many flights bound for SIN or FRA (from NY).

It's interesting assumption, if charged in the currency of your card you don't get charged a fee. Most of us would assume that is the case.

Of course over here in Singapore, if charged in SGD to a SGD card it's not necessarily the case. If the transaction is processed outside of Singapore (and you don't always know whether it will be or not), many credit cards have a foreign transaction processing fee (smaller than if charged in foreign currency, but a fee nevertheless). IIRC, back in the day when Uber used to exist in Singapore, they used to process their txn in Netherlands, and thus a foreign transaction fee would apply to Uber rides taken in Singapore, charged in SGD to a Singapore card.

But that is probably a Singapore thing. Not a US thing.

If you search for a US departing flight on the SQ site, it shows prices in USD. If you display flights originating in SIN, you see prices in SGD. I believe that if you use your card to purchase a USD priced fare, you are fine. If you purchase from a display in SGD, a US card would be subject to a transaction fee. I believe this also applied to RT fares.
