Transferring booking to a waitlisted award

Hi,

I am trying to book a business class award seat, but it's on waitlist. Suppose I put myself on the waitlist and proceed to booking an economy award (which is available). What happens when the waitlist clears? Can I just change the economy seat booking to the newly opened business class seat and pay the difference in miles / taxes? I asked a KF agent about this a while ago, and she said that I couldn't transfer the booking. I would have to cancel the economy class seat (and pay the cancellation fee) and wait for the miles to be refunded to my account (which can take a few weeks). In the meanwhile, I would need to come up with the miles for the business class seat. Is this the right info?

Thank you!

Just did this the other day going from standard business to saver business on a different date. They cancelled my ticket and changed my waitlisted ticket to 'reserved'. They said this meant that specific ticket was bookable only to me until the flight date, effectively giving me 5 months to book. The miles took 3 days to redeposit.

YMMV since the miles coming back to you from the first ticket won't cover the second ticket, so they won't know you'll have enough miles after the redeposit. However, I've read plenty of posts here that say they can do an urgent redeposit, or hold it longer (like mine) if you need to transfer from another currency.

Now what I don't know is what happens to taxes. The agent I worked with said I was out of luck and will end up paying them twice (once for the initial ticket, and again for the cleared waitlist). No refund. Can anyone confirm this before I call again?

I'm new to Singapore so don't know if this is how this is normally done but.... immediately after I booked my second choice dates I realised that left me with not enough miles to waitlist the preferred dates. Doh. I rang SQ and they waitlisted the preferred dates under the same PNR as the ones I had just booked. I presume if the waitlist clears, I will just be able to swap (paying the change fees of course). I imagine you could do the same as long as your booked and waitlisted flights are in the same PNR.

You can call in and add the waitlisted segment(s) to your confirmed booking (at least I have managed to) even if they are in different classes. When the waitlist clears, call in again to reissue the ticket and the additional miles and taxes will be deducted. May need to HUACA.
