It was indeed! I was not the only passenger connecting from Qatar and all of us were quite surprised. I presume he walked to the transfer counter for us and that was much appreciated. The Star Gold lounge was pretty grim though. The SQ flight was delayed by an hour and the airline set up a refreshment counter at the gate. That was rather thoughtful!

Most lounges in Jakarta's Airport, excluding that of Garuda in Terminal 3 can be described to be undesirable... The Singapore Airlines Lounge (aka the Esplanade Lounge) is actually one of the better ones in my opinion

And regarding the refreshments, I know from somewhere that under Indonesian Aviation Law, it is an airline's obligation to provide refreshments during delays... though I don't actually see it being done many times.

I was led to the airside departure area and asked to sit on the benches as he took my passport to somewhere mysterious to issue my boarding pass for SQ. He returned after 20 minutes and led me to the lounge used by SQ. It was way more convenient than I expected. I will also recommend the Jakarta Airport Hotel for its Super convenient location, especially for SQ and QR flights (for now). Both will be moving to Terminal 3 soon.
So, seeing as I have returned home in one piece, I thought it would only be polite to report on my own experience:

On the outbound (SIN-CGK on SQ, then CGK-DOH-LHR on QR), I went to the KF EG check-in counters of SQ and had no problems checking the bags through all the way to LHR.

As Marcel experienced himself, also I was met at the airbridge by an airport agent upon my arrival in CGK who was holding up a sign with my name. I had not expected that at all, and the chap said that their "system" had informed him; I am guessing my checked bag might have had to do with this? I wonder if the same had happened if I had been travelling in economy on QR? Anyway, also I was asked to sit down in the transfer area, and the agent disappeared with my passport and bag-tag in hand. After about 20 mins I got slightly nervous, wondering if perhaps I had become the victim of an elaborate con. So I wandered around a bit and asked various airport staff if what I was going through was commonplace - to my growing concern nobody seemed to have a clue as to what I was on about. Finally I had walked all the way to the immigration counters, where another airport agent who was dressed in the same way as my passport abductor started fretting with his walkie-talkie, when finally the first gentleman re-appeared with my passport, bag-tag and newly minted boarding passes for CGK-DOH-LHR. He was very apologetic about the long wait and walked me all the way to the departure lounge.

On the way back, I had decided to follow my fellow FT'ers' advice and only check my bags to CGK. Upon arrival, my bag arrived without a hitch, and I proceeded to the arrivals area, where I was informed that a member of the Orchardz team would be waiting for me. Alas, there was none. I called the two numbers I had been given in an email, and on the second try a chap answered in broken English promising to be with me soon. A few phone calls and 20mins later I was finally identified by the driver who drove me to the hotel in a clearly marked shuttle bus. He took the slightly scenic route, making me worried once again if I was perhaps being brought to a forced carpet-sale, but I needn't have fretted, as 15mins later we arrived at the Orchardz where I was checked in very swiftly and professionally. No massage was offered, but instead a much more useful wake-up call. They also took my request down to be shuttled back at 4am. To my surprise, breakfast was offered from 2.30am onwards, which I however did not try as I was short on sleep and long on calories. My wake-up call came promptly at 3:27am, followed by a reminder call at 3:45am that I was asked to come down for my shuttle. The shuttle left on the dot at 4:00am and arrived at Terminal 2 at 4:13am. I checked in within minutes and everything went smoothly from there.

All in all, I must say I had a very pleasant and much better experience than what I had envisioned before I commenced my trip. Would not hesitate to do this all again, even if it does considerably to the journey's length (Especially the return leg).

I tried this a year ago for jal-ga and also nh-sq via Jakarta airport. They all work pretty smoothly although the former makes me nervous because of long wait.

But I would suggest buffer enough time if either airlines are located at diff terminal. Half of the airlines are now located at T3!

Thank you both for the updates. It's been very helpful. I'll be doing a similar trip : SIN-CGK on SQ Y then CGK-xDOH-BOS J this Nov.
Glad to know that the bags will be tagged to the final destination which means I won't have to clear immigration & customs.
Should I play it safe & get into CGK 4 hours before my QR dep. or do u think 2 hrs before shd suffice (1pm vs 4pm for a QR dep of 6pm)
Also, I am wondering why did the airport ground staff have to issue you guys the BP for the onward journey. Weren't the BP available on the SQ/QR app. after OLCI?
I'd be a little wary of someone taking my passport away from me, was it because they had to go landslide to do the document verification for flights bound for USA?
Of course the alternative would be to get into CGK the night before & stay at 1 of the airport hotels nearby - the IBIS Styles airport hotel looks pretty good.
Lastly, when will the airlines move to T3 & what's the impact/difference of this move? I understand that the lounge QR uses in CGK T2 is pretty basic & crowded ... not really somewhere I wanna wait 4 hrs

play it safe and do 4 hours.... 2 hours always seems tight in Jakarta (you never know what can happen). All the foreign airlines are due to be moved to T3 by this yearís end if not earlier, notice will be given a couple of weeks til a week in advance. Terminal 3 is a very large terminal that in my opinion isnít well designed, it takes 10-15 minutes walking to go from one end to the middle of the terminal where all the formalities take place (transfers, immigration, security, etc).

CGK is one of those airports that require paper boarding passes, you just canít go through with a mobile one. Some airlines donít even issue you mobile passes after OLCI.

And honestly, whatís best about T2ís lounge is a ďsecret-but-not-so-secretĒ premium immigration desk. Premium class passengers (elites rarely apply) of certain airlines (including QR and CX) are to do check-in at the Premium Area, left of SQís desks. After check-in, you will be escorted through a short hallway with immigration formalities taking place at its end. The lounge is physically connected to this hallway, making it very very convenient vs. the crowded mess departure immigration could be in T2 (happens when QR, EK, SQ, and CX all have flights at similar times).

Finally, the lounge can be crowded, but wonít be as crowded as QRís Al Mourjan. Itíll always have several seats empty. The food is almost inedible, and the ambiance is 90s cigar club due to the dim lighting and perhaps the visitors it gets. Itís a very decent lounge to get your work done.

I was in Jakarta a week ago arriving in T2. There is a queue machine for Blue Bird, which is the cheaper sister of Silver Bird. You press the button on the machine, it will generate a queue number and you just queue up for the next avail Blue Bird taxi.

Check through baggage not guarantee

I just completed 1 way of my journey from Singapore to CGK on SQ and a separate ticket from CGK to Milan airport by QR.

the check through baggage did not work even though the check through tag was there. There was no staff waiting for me at the gate to process the next sector boarding pass , having worried that my baggage was left at Cgk airport, i decided to go past the custom to double check my luggage. Indeed it was there!

To caution everyone that in the event you need to retrieve your bag and recheck in at the Jakarta airport. Besure to give at least 4 hours in advance , the queue at the immigration can be extremely long up to 90min. You need to buffer even longer if your inward flight and outgoing flight are located at 2 diff terminals.

Thanks for the update - couple of questions :
1. What made u decide to exit immigration into the baggage claim area? If my bags were checked thru', I would not have done that - assuming that it would be going to my final destinasi as I am.
2. Why were u expecting a QR staff to meet u at the gate? Were u in F class? Would u not have been able to collect yr CGKDOHMXP BP from the trf desk?

Seems like my 5 hr transit/layover is about right ... but of course, Murphy's Law ...

I was in CGK a few days ago, arriving from a QR flight apparently.
I wasn't able to see any visible transfer desks, and as reported on some thread (I believe this one as well?) there supposedly isn't one anymore. Rather interestingly, I saw that there was actually an official 'transit passengers sign' (attached to the ceiling) with a security line and a manned desk (which could possibly be there to deal with transit issue?)

This is CGK after all.

And also, if you read above, there is a reported instances where the passenger was met at the gate by the airport staff for the transfer.

That is very interesting! Thanks for telling us

In spite of that, given how 'manual' of an airport CGK's terminal 2 is, I wouldn't be surprised if the luggage was indeed there for an airport personnel to collect and transfer to the next flight. Though I do agree, it sometimes would be better to be on the side of caution.

Hihi, I had success and had staff waiting for me before when I transit NH J/SQ J and JL F/GA Y. This time round it wasn't so.

Unless you have people attending to you for transit. The luggage might be left at the arrival hall waiting for your collection

Glad I took your advice & booked an earlier flight to CGK, leaving me 4-5 hrs to get myself from T3 where my SQ flight will arrive to T2 where my QR flight will depart.
Will post an update on the process of navigating between T2 & T3 - I'm going to ask very nicely for SQ to check my bags thru' to my final destination so that I won't have to schlep it across customs & terminals.

So the question that begs asking is - when will QR move to T3? I'm hoping that it'll be by month's end ... ^

Looking forward to hear how it goes!

I think it's entirely possible that QR might move to T3 by the end of the month given how short in advance the announcements are always made (~2 weeks), but I'm not counting on it. They said that they'll move all foreign airlines to T3 by the end of the year (pushed back from May, and again from last year September), but they say a lot of things

anyhow, safe travel always!
