Purchasing upgrade from SIN-NRT

I might be taking SIA for a trip coming up in Feb and at least for one of the legs from SIN-NRT is an A380. Does anyone have any a lot of experience on this flight? Are many upgrades to J available for purchase at the gate?

Especially if you're departing from SIN, yes you may upgrade to J ....

But the price will simply be the full fare difference between what you paid for your ticket and the full J fare from SIN to NRT which can be anywhere around US$ 3000 oneway !

If you can upgrade your ticket for less before you travel on a lower J class fare, do it. Cos you'll be whacked with the full Business class fare at the airport.

SQ does not need to sell you a seat for cheap. They'll sell it you at full fare.

Ouch. It's a little over $3k for business class for the whole trip. I don't want to spend that much though.

Fly another airline or use an award...

UA keeps selling upgrades.

I can get from point A to point B for a little cheaper on other airlines. The goal for me is to fly in the A380, flying J in an A380 would be icing on the cake.

Fair enough-Y on the Bird of Birds isn't bad either.

If you want to fly in a premium class on an A380 for (relatively) inexpensive in Asia, EK is the way to do that. They fly a BKK-HKG sector (as a tag to DXB-BKK) where the r/t is something like $500 USD for C/J, $600 for F. Considering that US domestic F fares are often multiples of that, and even the international birds of UA/AA F pale in comparison to an EK F suite (possibly even an EK J seat), that might be the way to go. (Also, until March, you can redeem CO miles for EK J as part of an award- and unlike SQ, EK doesn't block redemptions on A380s. This was how I switched from TG 744 J to EK 388 J.)

SQ... please insert coin. LOTS of coin. I don't think selling gate upgrades for cash is The SQ Way.
