4 changes to AMEX in 2013::td:

1. Mileage conversion rate has increased wef 01 May 2013: from 1.6MR = 1 mile since the 1990s to 1.8MR = 1 mile.

2. GST is chargeable for annual fees now. GST used to be included in the annual fees. Anyway no one pays annual fees now.

3. Points required for redemption has increased. Last time 3500 points get you a $20 voucher, now need 3800 points.

4. Merchant list for 5x points from Friday to Sunday has been reduced. No more Cold Storage/Marketplace.

That sounds like Amex HK changes in past 12 months.

1. Amex Plat Charge annual fee increase from $5,500 (S$873) to $7,800 (S$1,238) http://www.hongkongcard.com/forum/fo...ow.php?id=9103 .

$2,000 Shangri-La dining coupons and $3,000 Amex Farrington travel coupons thrown in as "renewal offers", but there are so many conditions attached to their use they are worth less than the Tempo packet in my pocket.

1a. Amex used to throw in up to $1,500 coupon or 300,000 HK MR points (20K miles) as renewal offers http://www.hongkongcard.com/forum/fo...hp?id=9103&p=4 . Now "the travel and dining coupons are the renewal offer". This is a further fee increase de facto for they exchanged a previously-valuable fee offset with toilet paper.

2. Amex Plat Cred no longer eligible for Turbo Rewards (2X MR on first HK$160K spending) waiver - now a separate HK$240 (S$38) fee http://www.hongkongcard.com/forum/fo...hp?id=7179&p=1

3. Payment of Amex Plat Cred annual fee no longer acts as automatic waiver for CX Elite Amex annual fee (CX Elite has complimentary Priority Pass for principal) - http://www.hongkongcard.com/forum/fo...ow.php?id=9637
(waivers now have to be earned just like any other CX Elite member - spending HK$150K/year or holding CX Marco Polo SL or better)

4. Amex Plat Cred concierge shuttered http://www.hongkongcard.com/forum/fo...w.php?id=10031

The only good thing I can say about Amex HK from an FT point ov view is that they haven't devalued the HK MR points any further (15 MR points - 1 AM/KF/Avios/Royal Orchid/VS mile) or fiddled with the redemption fee...yet.

$500 isnt a lot anyway.

Yeah it's a new rule starting April 1st, 2013. I did receive an SMS on this in March.

It's also updated in the Limousine booking form and T&Cs:

"The complimentary limousine transfer to airport is only available for Principal UOB PRVI Miles Platinum American Express Cardmembers who charge a prior travel-related transaction (limited to air ticket bookings, hotel bookings or any travel package from a travel or tour agency) of a minimum amount of S$500 in a single receipt to their UOB PRVI Miles Platinum Cards to qualify for the complimentary one-way limousine service to Singapore Changi Airport. In the event the Principal Cardmember utilizes the Service without charging a prior travel-related transaction of at least S$500 to the Principal Cardmember's Card, UOB will charge S$40 for the Service to the Principal Cardmember's Card."

Well, it is surprising that AMEX cards, at least when it comes to Singapore, have been quite poor regarding those cards issued directly by AMEX. Over here the DBS one was by far the best AMEX card to have - now it's the UOB version. I still wonder though why the direct offer from AMEX is so bleak...

New AMEX Krisflyer Ascend

New in SG

http://www.americanexpress.com/sg/kr...ode=V3HAXX2XV1

Not the best earn rate at 2x better than AMEX krisflyer Gold for 1st 3 months.

Higher annual fee but comes with 1 night hotel stay and 4x SATs / PP lounge access.

Thanks for the news... will they replace the old one once it expires? The annual fees are completely different. I would assume they have to inform customers first before switching to this new Ascend card?
I like the new design though. Much better than the tacky gold.

I called the sales hotline. Nope, Ascend card will not replace the AMEX KrisFlyer Gold. AMEX KrisFlyer Gold card is still around.

1 KrisFlyer mile for every S$1.20 => $1 = 0.83 mile, => 2.083x only based on $2.50/mile.

Anyway, if you pay the annual fee S$256.80 (incl. of GST), you get extra:
· 5x KrisFlyer miles* on all eligible purchases made in the first 3 months, up to a cap of 25,000 bonus miles.

· Spend S$6,000 within the first 12 months of application approval and you may also receive a Samsonite Colory 57/20” Luggage*

Any applicants of the American Express Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer Ascend Credit Card who pay the full annual fee of S$256.80 (inclusive of GST) may enjoy an alternative sign-up offer. For details, contact us at 6291 2640.

My opinion on this card: Apply before 31 July online get first year free & the bonus 5000 miles. Use only for first 3 months. After that can collect dust in the drawer.

From the website

Receive a bonus of 5,000 KrisFlyer miles2 the very first time you charge to your Card. Limited to first time applicants for American Express Singapore Airlines Credit Cards only.

This is going to be a deal breaker for many of us i think.

Would you be penalised for cancelling a card after three months?

vsepr Apr 16, 13 4:03 am

Yes...but there is no need to cancel after 3 months...just don't use it. Usually cards are cancelled when annual fee is charged and cannot be waived.

by the way, is it worth it for me to pay the annual fee for my DBS Altitude VISA and get the 10,000 miles? or should I just call up the bank to ask for a waiver of the annual fees?

request expert opinions please..

Actually with DBS they are most professional about renewal fees because if you cross a certain threshold then they automatically waive them. Moreover, if you are under the limit then it's actually WORTH paying the fees and getting the miles in return as it's a very good deal. :)

lcpteck Apr 16, 13 5:54 pm

As a mile earning card, no. There are other cards which earns 4mile/$ which is way much better. But it's a bit better than the old Amex Krisflyer Gold (which is replaced by this card). However, you get a free night in that hotel brand and 4x lounge access (specific brand) annually. And of course 5000 KF miles upon sign up.

The T&Cs for this card is pretty tricky in terms of the bonus miles earned during the first 3 months usage.
