Just heard that the HSBC Advance will be converted to a cashback card from 1st June. Another one bites the dust.

What's the best card to use for buying some SQ flight tickets now (Doesn't seem like the Wiki is updated)?

http://www.dbs.com.sg/personal/promo...pedia-bookings DBS Altitude currently seems to have a 6-9miles/s$ promo until 31st July via Expedia, any other promo running that's better?

natcin May 25, 2017 1:46 am

only valid for $2501-5000th spending for the month, otherwise its the regular 3. UOB offers 6mpd, but iirc only very few selected airlines, so if your airline falls under that list, then UOB.

Unless I read the t&c wrongly, it's 3mpd for $0-$2500, 6mpd for $2500-$5000, plus 3mpd for SQ (among others) booking via Expedia. So min 6mpd, potentially 9mpd depending on spending habits, no?

^ holy crap you are right

totally missed this promotion

i am now crying over lost miles :(

Seems like Citi PM card is the best card after ANZ Travel card, since earn in S$1, but the decimal place is rounded off. Example: S$1=1.2 miles, only 1 mile is awarded.

Are you sure about that. S$1 = 1.2 miles, as does S$1.99.

In my March statement I checked my earn.

Used four methods:

1) Round down each dollar amount for each txn, don't round down points
2) Round down each dollar amount for each txn, round down points for each txn
3) Don't round down dollar amount , round down points for each txn
4) No rounding whatsoever

The methods came up with amount as:
1) 4966.8
2) 4959
3) 4967
4) 4975.8

The actual amount was 4966. Suggesting method 1 ... round down dollar amount, but only rounding down points after they are summed.

In any event the difference in this case was trivial.

Thanks for the analysis. How does this total amount reconcile with the online Citibank Rewards portal that shows item by item breakdown of miles earned? Do they add up?

It's confusing, because of the additions on individual days, and dates don't match.

I think the calculation is:
1) Round down dollar amount
2) Add up rounded dollar amounts for each day
3) Multiply by 1.2 and also foreign spend multiply by 0.8 for bonus points
4) Round up or down the daily amount

On my statements:

Spend $14.82 = 1.2 x 14 = 16.8 Points accrued on rewards site = 17
Spend $9.00 = 1.2 x 9 = 10.8 Points accrued =11
Spend $49.83 = 1.2 x 49 = 58.8 Points accrued = 59
One day spend: $158.73 + $107. Points = (158+107)*1.2 = 318 = Points accrued.

Foreign spend of $7.55 = 7x1.2 = 8.4, Points accrued = 8
bonus points = 7*0.8 = 5.6, Bonus Points accrued = 6

If you go back to original comment from vespr, is correct $1 = 1.2 points, rounded down to 1. So if you're make 100 $1.99 transactions, you are effectively only getting 100 points on $199 spend, or 0.5025 points per dollar. But of course if you spend $199 in one transaction, should get 239 points or 1.201 points per dollar.

I am trying to figure out how Citi PM award the miles too since they do not award in decimal places like they used to in the past.

I have a S$74.40 transaction and was awarded 89 miles.
Citi Premiermiles Earned + 89

It's either 74.4x1.2=89.28, round down to 89 miles or, 74x1.2=88.8, round up to 89 miles. Need more transactions to determine. To determine, we need small transactions <S$1, S$1.99, $2.95 etc.. to find out accurately. I am very sure in the past transactions <S$1 do not earn any miles. Not sure now.
But for foreign currency transactions, I can confirm the cents are ignored and after that x2. For example, after conversion =S$18.78, I got 36 miles.

For other cards like Citi Rewards and Clear, points are awarded based on per S$1. Cents are ignored.

So it seems that a lot of t he banks seem to be cleaning house all at once.

Just to confirm:
1. Fever topup with WWMC no longer earns 4mpd
2. HSBC Advance no longer offering 4mpd on online spend

Am I right?

What about the ANZ travel visa card? Can it stil be used to earn 1.4 mpd on general spending? Am a little confused about what is going to happen to the card.

tboons May 27, 2017 8:30 pm

Yeah

Now any recommendation for card for dining? Trying to avoid minimum spend...

The card will be terminated in July and you'll be provided with Altitude card, if you don't have one. If you have Altitude, your points will be transferred over. That's what we have heard so far.
