Sorry, I should have specified that I didn't mean the Cold Storage vouchers which are part of this promo but the restaurant vouchers that come as part of the FAR card (when purchased directly from the hotel group). These vouchers are for stuff like free wine, free birthday cake, etc.

Yes, I was referring to the FAR and Palate Vouchers. It will come via post a couple of weeks later. It is inside a pack which states the benefits and the hotel and meal vouchers are inserted inside the set.

Hello people at flyerstalk,

I have a couple of question that needs your expert guidance.

Basically, in a few months time, I will need to pay a fee in the UK ad was wondering if it makes any sense to pay it thru my credit card or should i get my money changed via a money changer.

I am holding a the DBS Treasures Black Elite American Express® Card which says "With 6x DBS points on all overseas spend, you need to spend only S$0.42 to earn 1 air mile."

https://www.dbs.com.sg/treasures/deposits/treasures-black-elite-card/privileges/rewards.page

Note:
Transfer must be in blocks of 10,000 DBS Points.

So, lets say I have to pay 15k in GBP....
GBP 15k * forex rate (lets say 2.2) * 3.5% (admin fee for amex and dbs) =
SGD 33000 + 1155 = SGD 34155

With $34155 charged as overseas transcation, would that mean i will in return get 81K kf miles or about 40k dbs points.

IF forex is 2.2 it would cost 33000+1155 = 34155 for 81k miles/
IF forex is 2.3 it would cost 34500+1207 = 35707 for 81k miles/

Does it make any sense to do it in such a way or should i get my money changed at the money changer since they always seem to have a better rate as compared to the bank?

Please advice :)

Well, 80k miles (before discount) can redeem a roundtrip J class ticket to Japan Ex-SIN. I wouldn't mind paying the forex rate. :D

lcpteck, thanks for giving it a read!
but with 3.5% transcation fee by amex and dbs, do you think its still worth it?

anyone else with any tips on how to go about, would love to hear it from you :)

For starters, wouldn't using a different card be a better idea?

UOB Privi Amex gives slightly more miles at 2.5 miles/$, and currently there should be some card with a promotional ratio of 3 miles/$, no?

aster May 16, 14 9:46 am

Forgot to add one thing, I'd definitely go for the UOB Privi AMEX as there is a 20,000 miles bonus for spending $50,000 in a year. With the ads calculated to cost around $34,155, this seems like the best card to go for as long as one can generate the additional $15,845 during the remainder of the year...

Unless someone else is paying for the bad FX rate, it is not worth it. You are simply buying more miles with cash. I still prefer to use a visa with a reasonable FX Rate.

percysmith May 17, 14 2:05 am

Let's crunch the numbers to determine the price. For S$100 foreign spending:

Visa fee: s$2.5
Ae fee: S$3.25

Visa miles: 200
Ae miles: 250

Miles "purchased": 50 miles
Extra forex fee paid: s$0.75

Cost per mile: s$0.015
Marginal..

But I have nothing against buying miles. I would buy them if $0.005 (anz tax payment) http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/singa...l#post22728595

Just FYI, the fx fees that I've been seeing on UOB Prvi is actually very close to 3% (like 3.02% or something)- and this on currencies like LKR and INR...

And this being the spread off the mid rate off bloomberg.

Volasia May 17, 14 8:16 am

If I'm not wrong, ANZ charges 1.5% FX Fee. Also, I believe Amex always converts to USD first, which means an additional spread to pay (before the 3% is charged).

The same for DFS shops... Nothing like buying a cheap duty free spirits and earning 4miles/S$1 :)

MilesBuzz May 19, 14 1:59 am

What about at other branded boutiques (like Gucci, Burberry, etc) inside the Changi Airport? Tempted to buy some branded gifts there for my wife.
