Op Up's
Just thought you all might like to know, my friends, that SIA gave me an "op up" last week from Asia to Australia (Y to C/J class).
Who says that it doesn't happen? (I was mightily surprised!).
Anyone else with a similar story to tell?

Yup, as fimo has pointed out, it does happen, but it's definitely rare. I fly SQ relatively frequently and last year can only recall a couple of op-ups (coincidentally, one of them flying SIN-SYD, from C to F, so I felt extremely lucky! ).

A couple of op-ups is what we get in several years, if we are lucky enough.

A couple of op-ups in several years. I've had 1 (Satu, Uno, Une, Uma, One) op up in my whole SQ "career".
Ok, not quite Kiwi Flyer luck - but I think I'm still dragging the flyertalk SQ board op up average down here a long way....
Oh, did i mention 1 ?

Out of maybe 40 flights on SQ last year, I was op-upped twice, as I recall: one BKK-SIN, in March, and as mentioned the SIN-SYD one in July.
However, they did seem to happen with a little more frequency previously--I think there were more than a couple the year before (only on the SIN-BKK-SIN route).

Op-up = class upgrade? How do you ask for an upgrade? I've heard that you need to be presentable and polite at the check-in counter. Well, I've tried that a couple of times but haven't been successful. Or did you guys automatically get the upgrade from the airline?

A school of thought - especially on the BA forum advocates that a request for an op-up is a surefire way NOT to get one.

Op-ups can occur if the class you are booked in is oversold, and the airline will normally upgrade one or more pax to the next class of service in order of elite status and (I believe) fare paid.
Being presentable and polite can definitely help, but asking for it, at least on SQ, appears to be a bad idea.
