I think it depends how you asked. If you said, "Hi, can I please have some XXXX?" in a pleasant demeanor, then you're good. If you went up to the FA and started making demands or screaming, then yes, you did a DYKWIA move.

Sure, it’s a DWKWIA move.

So what?

My two cents -- if boarding started on time, or even early, and the flight is scheduled to leave on time, then there's usually a few minutes quiet before the door gets closed, and asking for PDB in the forward cabin during that lull is okay.

But, if boarding / flight is running late in any way, then wait for the 10k ding before asking!

In most of my domestic f flights in the last six months including a week ago I was offered pdb. YMMV

I frequently "ask" but to be more specific, I'm asking for a small glass of water or orange juice as I'm boarding a red-eye, telling them (honestly) that I need to take some meds. Never been turned down.

The pdb seems to be spotty, lately has been more consistent. I wouldn't ask for one unless offered. I don't think it is a dykwia move generally if you asked politely.

OP I’ve asked on several occasions. This has been when everyone is seated and the flight attendants are doing nothing but talking to each other. Both times I was rebuffed and told “we don’t have time now we’ll get you a drink up in the air” and they would resume their chatter to each other.

PDB actually is not a published benefit/service anywhere in their marketing. I have no idea what the FA contract says, but I'm guessing if it is in their it's up to FA discretion. That gives them lots of latitude in how they decide if they can/will offer PDBs.

But, no, it's not a DYKWIA move to politely ask. The worst they can say is no and you have to wait until after take off.

How so? OP can ask and the FAs can either say yes or no.

If they say no, and the OP drops their status, how they always get PDB on every flight, how important they are etc., then that is DYKWIA. Simply asking, not at all.

I've never been declined a PDB in J/F asking nicely on any airline, especially international flights. AA and UA are fairly consistent this year
