2 fatalities reported so far. Keeping tabs on primary incident sites:

Accident: India Express B738 at Kozhikode on Aug 7th 2020, overran runway and fell into valley

Not surprising both pilots perished considering front of tube was sheared off.

Eerily similar to the Air India Express accident in Mangalore 10 years ago, also a 737 landing in wet conditions on a runway with a sharp drop off. Have to say I’ll probably be extra aware next time I’m on a 737 landing in rain/stormy conditions.

RIP to those who perished and hopes for a speedy recovery for the survivors.

I'll hazard a guess landing long due to tailwind and probably carrying extra speed due to marginal wx like some pilots do. ILS was in service sct 003 isnt great but most ils will get you down to 200ft. Maybe wx was worse than reported, 3 approaches without a divert seems a bit much.

There had been several recommendations over the past 10 years that the CCJ runway needs to have modifications done (e.g. speed retarders constructed at both ends) to enhance safety - but considering that Indian bureaucrats are nincompoops, such actions were never taken - even after the IXE crash 10 years ago!
