Another Anniversary Sale? and Refaring with "free" changes!s.

I logged in this morning and was greeted by an announcement of the Anniversary Sale, so I tried to see if any of my fares had gone down and discovered that I can't simply check the fares for July and August, since I am being offered free changes. I can't simply change to a lower fare. It looks like the only way to do that is check my receipt then check the fare for the flight flight then cancel and rebook, if the fare went down..

Is there a trick I'm missing?

Correct in this special case. Book a new ticket at the lower fare then cancel the old ticket.

Or, in some cases, book the new lower fare, even if at bad time of day.

Then go in and change that to the better time of day with no fare change.
