More Nostalgia: Pictures of The Heathrow of 1990

I found a copy of a book my mother had gotten me a long time ago, the inside is dated 1990.

The history and what was then current facts are fun and interesting

Ah the glory days of 757s

Terminal 4 overview

Concorde of course

Proud old birds

Facts and figures

Hope everyone enjoyed, it was a real fun stroll down memory lane looking through the book. It has some of the last Pan Am and TWA pictures in it and nothing from AA or UA yet.

Ah back when a 757 was considered a "short-haul jet"!

I have this book, somewhere in deep storage but heaven knows where.

There are cited references to this in my post grad thesis, "Heathrow: Analysis of an Airport Metropolis". A copy of which is probably in the same box.

Very interesting!

Out of curiosity, when did Runway 05/23 stop being used? I seem to remember it was still in use into the early 1990s from my occasional visits to the open viewing area on the top of T2, but could be wrong...

Wasn't it Air Europe? Air Europa survived and still operates to/from/within Spain. Air Europe has not...

BA and Air Europe used to swap a couple of 757s. Here's the reverse

Very cool. .....the Concord, miss that plane.

Iraqi Airlines 747. Does it really say "Aeroflot is the worlds largest airlines"? Could that have been true back then?

Yes Aeroflot was the largest civilian operator of aircraft into the 1990s. It was everything from Widebodies to cropdusters and helicopters. During the Soviet era they were the sole entity for running all non-military aviation and provided the Soviet Armed Forces with their air transport reserve.

Thank you for posting that.

The most depressing thing about this is that 1990 now apparently counts as "nostalgia" ...

Ah yes, I remember those days. When to fly virtually anywhere in Europe from LHR or LGW without a Saturday night stay was circa £350-400 to France, Germany, Belgium, NL and £400-500 to Scandinavia, Italy, Spain etc. This was in economy!! CE I recall was only about 10-15% more than Y.

Include a Saturday night back then and the Y fare dropped to around £140-£180. Contrast that to today and I have just booked an LGW-GOA-LGW with no Saturday night stay for £78 return and a LHR-STR-LHR week day return (on the morning and evening peak services) for £125 return.
