Air Canada sells your mailing address to Money Mart
So unfortunately, because it includes personal information (mailing address etc) I can't post the pictures here on FT because it does not comply with FT rules.
BUT I now have definitive proof that Air Canada, when you put an address in to buy a flight pass, whatever database that information goes into, that database was sold to Money Mart for marketing purposes, where Money Mart will send mail out to those people trying to get their business.
Any suggestions on how we can get Air Canada to stop doing this? Because I'm sick of getting this junk mail and I absolutely HATE companies like Money Mart having my mailing address because Air Canada decided to give it to them without my permission because I bought a flight pass from Air Canada.

The information was provided to Air Canada at the time of purchase for the flight pass. If they then provided that information to Aeroplan who provided it to Money Mart does that make them any less guilty? Air Canada is who was provided with the information.

Fair enough. I always thought one first had to become an Aeroplan member before being able to purchase a flight pass - hence my question.

I suspect Sean used a unique address for his FP purchase that did not match anything he'd ever given out.
Otherwise he wouldn't make a claim like this.

Flight passes are weird. AC requires you to plug in a user's Aeroplan number when purchasing the pass or adding users to the flight pass. However, when you book a flight on the flight pass you can enter your FF program details into the booked ticket (i.e. UA in my case). This leads me to believe that Aeroplan is only used for identification purposes since the Aeroplan profile contains the user's name, address, DOB and other personally identifiable information.

Oh, I also know the Citibank was hacked, cause got a spam email (I used my email for someone else who opened a Citi account). But it all is meaningless.
If you really want to do it you can try a class-action lawsuit (don't know if Canadians laws are like US)

Maybe AC and Money Mart are starting a marketing partnership?

I'd consider that pretty definitive.
If I sign up for FT with the email [email protected], and Reddit with [email protected], and then I get spam sent to [email protected], I know which website sold my information.
Very easy to do that with a physical address if you have extras you can use. My mom receives no mail for me. It would be an interesting experiment to sign up for something with my name and her address if I had suspicions about a company doing something like this.
If the FP system allows a PO box (I can't recall if they do), it becomes quite trivial.
Anyway, my point was more that Sean isn't dumb like many people on the internet, and I while I disagree with not sharing the evidence, I believe him in his use of the phrase "definitive proof".

Agreed.
I know of one individual many years ago who discovered the same thing, and contacted the legal team of a company doing this. It may or may not be Air Canada, I cannot recall the exact company. There was a small "settlement" involved. It's a pathetic widespread practice that they will deny until you present evidence and threaten legal action.

Something else to work out by 2020.
