Cat got captain's tongue I think !

We came down to Sofia on Monday (BA890). The flight was on time, all went smoothly, apart from one curious thing - we didn't hear a peep from the captain the entire time we were on board...

In fact, the post-boarding PA didn't even come from the flight deck, it was done by a CC member !

On the approach, we flew a downwind leg East past the airfield, and as I saw it slide past the left-hand window, I did think "gosh, he's leaving it late to turn on the seat-belt signs". And indeed, on they went 7 minutes before touchdown... and then, 3 minutes before touchdown, the FO finally advised the CC that we were about to land...

Once at the gate, again not a word from the flight deck

Maybe they were just busy, or maybe the captain was just in a grumpy mood

In any case, it didn't affect our enjoyment of the flight it was just rather unusual !

P.S. I caught a glimpse of the captain as we disembarked, so feel confident saying "he"

HA! On a very recent trip I rang the CC Call-Bell for the first time ever to point out the seat-seat-belt sign hadn't been switched on! That was about 5 miles out from LGW on final approach!! (See OGG Trip Report, Part 1)

Same Captain?

Ah but we don't really know:

The captain may have made the announcements but the PA system was broken
The captain may have had laryngitis
The captain may have been fighting off a terrorist
The oP may in fact have been hypnotized and does not remember the announcements
The OP may have been asleep

In any event none of us were there so we don't know what happened

But we do know that BA is profitable so less cockpit announcements are likely

😀😉😂

Certainly unusual for BA, as normally there are two fairly standard cockpit PA announcements (prior to departure, and prior to descent). Never had this before on BA.

My money was on "abducted by aliens" so it may have been a hologram I saw in the left-hand seat

Not sure how those two statements go together but I was unfortunately wide awake and stone-cold sober as I was driving on arrival at SOF

There are, of course, pre-Landing checks (and many others) which are either 'memory items' (such as lowering the landing gear!) and 'checklist items' (aka RTFM ). Neither should be disturbed by anything ... they're the fundamentals of operating an aircraft, innit?

Hopefully they're not lowering the landing gear before switching on the seatbelt sign!

IIRC it was quite close to being simultaneous

On a recent LHR-PRG the captain was mumbling so rapidly and softly (or the PA volume was low) that I didn't even realise he was making his speech until the final sentence. He didn't say anything before descending either. I was in ET so had nothing to eat or drink on board (and was too late to the airport for lounge )

Watch from about 12 seconds
it does require a fairly juvenile mindset, but always brings a smile to me if I happen to think of it on take off or landing.

Hmmm

Am I the only one that could do with no announcement ever again...

I don't care about altitude, weather on arrival etc.. I see the constant announcements from the CC in the mono-tonal voice etc as just noise rather than helpful.

If the landing gear is lowered, the seat belt sign should illuminate automatically.

Very helpful for those with early onset of altzheimers disease.
