Motion Passed: Restrict Access to OMNI and OMNI/PR
Moved by nsx and seconded by bhatnasx:
Per the TalkBoard Guidelines:
The purpose of posting voting topics in the public TalkBoard Topics forum is to solicit member feedback on any motions that are up for a vote and to allow for comments after a vote is made. It is at the sole discretion of the individual TalkBoard members whether they choose to post in the public discussion thread, there being no requirement to do so.
So while there is already a thread and discussion on this general topic and it is safe to assume that TalkBoard members have reviewed that thread, this thread is about this specific motion. Please feel free to post questions, comments or any other sort of feedback.
A motion shall pass if two-thirds of TalkBoard members participating in that vote vote ‘yes.’
FlyerTalk members have expressed concerns about the lack of privacy of their posts on OMNI and OMNI/PR, including their accessibility to search bots and to suspended members. Members overwhelmingly prefer a more secure environment in which they will feel more free to speak.
The TalkBoard recommends that access to OMNI, OMNI/PR, and all future OMNI forums be restricted to logged-in members who have been members at least 180 days and whose post count is at least 180.
This vote will close on Mar 10, 2011 at 6:56 PM Pacific Time or after all TalkBoard members have registered their vote, whichever comes first. The TalkBoard recommends that access to OMNI, OMNI/PR, and all future OMNI forums be restricted to logged-in members who have been members at least 180 days and whose post count is at least 180.

Am I assuming correctly that this restriction would restrict access to any current members who haven't yet reached the 180 days/180 posts requirement?

If you have less than 180/180 and this passes, you'll no longer be able to view OMNI until you reach those thresholds.

This would effect me as I'm an avid reader but my post count is under 180. I also understand the need for privacy though and agree with your concerns.
Oops, I guess I am over.

I would have preferred a 90/90 limit to see if this were enough to resolve the problems raised. I think the danger of 180/180 is that makes OMNI appear to be some sort of elite club.
However, we'll see where we are once the vote closes.

The concept of restricting content to any users for whatever reason is abhorrent and totally against the spirit of what FlyerTalk was established for.
If you are concerned about your "privacy", don't play on the interwebs.

For those who might not be aware. OMNI used to have a 180/180 & logged-in restriction; this isn't coming out of the blue. Randy originally implemented the restriction because he wanted the focus to be on the core forums of FT, which are travel. You 'earned' your way into OMNI by posting in the core forums & contributing to the main purpose of FT, and having the timeline involved helped to eliminate pad posting. OMNI has always been a byproduct of FT, and not its main focus.
Cheers.

This is a good idea. I hope IB will allow it should the recommendation pass.

I support this. Not to keep OMNI out of Google, there are easier ways to do that, but to maintain the focus on frequent flyer/guest programs and travel. Someone who doesn't find FT valuable enough to stick around for those reasons won't stick around long enough to get into OMNI. I think that's fine.
I think the removal of the restriction had to do with building traffic to the site. May have made sense at the time, but the specific reason for removing it then no longer applies - so let's put it back!

If this passes, it will be one of the best things to come out of the TB in years.

I'm strongly in favor of this motion, which will eliminate the One Post Wonders that OMNI and, particularly OMNI/PR have been attracting.

IMHO, if OMNI were eliminated people would make off-topic posts all over FT. It's better to put similar content in one place. This is the same reason any forum is created or maintained.
The access question is a separate issue, and on that issue FT members have spoken quite clearly in the TalkBoard Topics forum: They liked it better when it was restricted to 180/180.
