Indeed. In the interests of safety I made the supreme self-sacrifice by sticking to the Dom for my bubbles that flight.

I don't think Bollinger will be too happy to be referred to as producing a sparkling wine either.

HA!!!!!!! I started to roll my eyes when I saw this until I saw who had posted it. I thought that I was doing pretty well once a couple of years ago when I consumed a whole bottle of Krug on the old CX 884 HKG-LAX and I was the only F pax. Then I read some of Moomba's postings and realized that I was a mere amateur....

Pfft Only 1 bottle for such a long flight?

1 bottle is good for 1 pax for a short hop like Singapore to Jakarta and last year "I got a little shock when the first bottle of Krug was finished before we even passed Adelaide" (from Melbourne).

Transit in Istanbul

I was tired so spent the time catching up on messages. I didn't partake of the great food and drinks on offer.

The lounge was very busy due to the large bank of early morning flights. There was a cacophony of flight calls and final flight calls. In my tired state I found it hypnotic and struggled to listen out for my own flight being called. After I while I decided there was a good chance I'd miss the call and so left the lounge a few minutes before boarding commenced on the assumption there was no delay. The departure monitor in the lounge had so many flights that even though mine was about to board it did not appear on the screen at all.

The gate was a long way from the lounge. Unlike my previous visit this time we got a real gate not a bus to a remote stand. This means security is cleared at the gate with minimal queue as opposed to teaming masses at central security for the bus gates. A passport check was done just before security. The officer started flipping through my passport to find a visa but seemed to realise after a couple of moments that actually I don't need one.

Boarding was well underway by the time I was through security.

I know, those little buggers are quite temperamental and will be all over the place since their attitude changes all the time.

ISTANBUL to BUCHAREST (IST-OTP) on Turkish Airlines 737-800 in business class

The other business class passengers had already boarded so my carry on ended up in the overhead bin several rows back.

As is common with intra-europe business class the seats are economy seats with adjustable divider between business and economy cabin. The middle seat has a tray table that has been snapped or bolted onto the armrests.

Before take off we had a choice of water, orange juice or sparkling wine.

We had a long taxi around the terminal and I was keeping myself awake for the expected beautiful views over the city and Bosphorus. Unfortunately there was a general mist which thickened into heavy fog over and near the Bosphorus, obscuring the old parts of the city.

I'd hoped to get some sleep onboard so I could keep going for the rest of the day, but unfortunately seated all around me were a group of mates who were noisily talking and joking amongst themselves all flight.

After takeoff we got a mostly dry towelette and a menu was handed out, followed shortly afterwards by the breakfast tray and drinks.

The skies turned overcast not long into the flight and so there was no view until we were well into the descent - farms and villages passing by just before we touched down.

The flight was quite short at not much over an hour, but the taxi on landing was surprisingly long.

Transit in Bucharest

For some reason when I booked this trip I thought I had about 6 hours here, which is enough time for a speedy trip into the city, wander around exploring and return to the airport. I'd checked transport options and worked out a rough plan of where I'd go.

Now I realised I had less time than I thought, but perhaps enough for a quick visit if I don't dally. I'd have to be careful about catching a bus or cab back to the airport in time, for I'd checked the schedules and if I miss the flight I'd need to take a complicated rerouting to get back on schedule with a high risk of misconnections along the way - worst case I could be stuck for a day and downgraded as well.

However, there was another factor. I haven't mentioned it yet, but the day before this trip I'd injured my ankle. As this was still rather painful I was not feeling up to running around like a headless chook, or even hobbling long distances without sufficient "medication".

So do I still head into the city but probably not have time to see anything, except from a cab or bus? I had put off making this decision until arrival.

I had to wait until most passengers had disembarked before I could retrieve my bag. Then, walking off the airbridge I reluctantly opted for remaining at the airport - less stress and pain, but I also missed out on seeing a bit of Bucharest.

At transfer security I was held up because I did not have an onward boarding pass and there is no transfer desk at the airport. The officer tried contacting the airline of my next flight to verify my itinerary printout but was unable to get hold of anyone. I waited, trying to rest my bad ankle and pondered the prospect of having to sit at transfers for the next wee while, or perhaps I should suck up getting another passport stamp in my nearly full passport and go landside? While I thought about it the officer managed to contact her supervisor who came by and authorised her to let me through.

Back airside I hobbled around for a bit and then dozed watching a Romanian news channel while I waited for the airline I'm flying next to open a gate. When they did I tried to check in. What followed was rather bizzare and paraphrased below.

Agent - "I see your final destination is Sydney."
Me - "No it isn't and I'm happy to be checked in only to the next airport."
Agent - "I can't do that, and I need to see your visa for Australia."
Me - "That's odd, and I don't need a visa for Australia."
Agent - "Yes you do."

Now, I've had my share of dealing with agents with questionable visa knowledge and so have long had the practice of bringing with me printouts from Timatec of entry requirements for certain odd countries. But I've never bothered doing this with such western countries as USA, Canada, western Europe, Australia, etc. Perhaps I need to start?

After several minutes haggling eventually he contacted someone who contacted someone else who convinced him that I was correct - I do not need a visa for Australia.

That sorted he next had some computer problem checking me in. I thought I'd end up spending the rest of the transit at the gate waiting, but instead he said he'd call the lounge to ask them to let me in sans boarding pass ^

There is a contract lounge here used by many airlines for their business class and elite passengers. It is down in the basement. By the time I'd arrived my details had been sent and so I was let in.

Despite having 3 computer terminals, only 1 was operable (no keyboard or mouse for the other 2). There is a very modest drink selection and food consists of snacks. For a while I thought I'd gotten lost and somehow ended up in a bar-less Red Carpet Club!

The lounge steadily filled while I waited. After a while the agent came by with 3 boarding passes for me.

Then, just as I was about to leave following the boarding call, disaster struck. My pants got caught and a 6 inch split down the seam resulted in seconds. Yikes. There wasn't time to get these repaired or even to get changed into fresh pants (the nearest bathroom is outside the lounge in the opposite direction to the gate). I dived into my bag for some little hotel sewing kits to pin up the split as an emergency measure. A second call was made so I headed out to the gate, hoping the tiny pins would hold.

BUCHAREST to FRANKFURT on Lufthansa 737-300 in business class

Boarding was almost complete by the time I arrived at the gate. The business cabin today was fairly small, with just a mother and small child and me as passengers, other than that is the half a dozen LH staff in uniform (cabin crew and pilots). Interesting dynamics in their choices of seats within the cabin

No pre-departure anything. We pushed back early and had a quick taxi, so were soon in the air. The skies had clouded over somewhat so no good views.

Shortly thereafter a meal and drinks were served. No menu, but from memory there was a roll, small salad, some cold cuts and cheeses, a chocolate easter bunny, a mousse dessert and some fruit. Not bad for shorthaul.

As I was by now exhausted I fell asleep for a while, awaking to find a wine refill beside me ^ and we were beginning our descent. It was raining in this part of Germany so no view on landing until close to touch down.

We had a short taxi to a remote stand. When I came to disembark I noticed the pins had not held up. So I scurried off the aircraft to find a bathroom I could get changed in. At the bottom of the airstairs was waiting a driver and Merc to take me into the terminal. The driver didn't say anything about the split so hopefully she didn't notice (or at least was being polite).

A longish drive and I was deposited at B non-schengen bus gates.

I usually wait until the end of installment reports to comment, but that amazing beverage menu at Lufthansa's First Class Terminal is more impressive than those found at most fine restaurants. Then again, when you're paying thousands more for the right to fly upstairs on Lufthansa, perhaps it should be. If only other airlines saw it that way.

Aside from acknowledging yet another interesting and entertaining report from one of FlyerTalk's most prolific writers, I'd also like to take a moment to thank you for taking the time to transcript each and every one of your menus along with that spectacular listing from the Lufthansa First Class Terminal.

While many of our reporters claim they don't have time to transcript menus and the like (They're too lazy is more like it) they conveniently overlook the fact that these reports will be available for viewing years from now via Google search or FlyerTalk archives. The extra 30 minutes spent transcripting today will be appreciated by many years from now.

I don't want to be too picky but the agent was correct, you do need a visa for Australia. NZ citizens need a visa for Australia, Australians do not need a visa for NZ until your new legislation comes into effect.
The important thing for the agent however should be that NZ citizens will get a Special Category Visa issued upon arrival and do not need a visa before boarding.

Great report as always! Looking forward to the LH flight.

Transit in Frankfurt

At the B bus gates a quick turn and up the escalator to the departures level, and a short walk to the first class lounge. The sign-posting isn't the best for the confusing layout, so, as is often the case here, I also helped out a few travellers who were lost.

On entry I was reminded to check back before departure in case the gate had changed - at the moment it was listed as a real gate not far away and thus there would be no car to the aircraft.

I scurried to a shower room so I could get changed, freshen up, and make some emergency repairs to my pants. There I was in one of the best airport lounges in the world and instead of enjoying the facilities I was seated in a bathroom restitching a seam. Who said travel was glamorous?

That sorted I had a refreshing and much needed shower. Next stop was a refreshing drink - I'd been up for more hours than I cared and while I was waiting to hear from someone I planned to meet up with, I needed to resist the temptation of sleep in a day room and stay awake. As such, I stopped after a couple of whiskies. Oh well, there'll be another visit to continue the research sampling the range.

The lounge was very quiet as it was hours before the evening bank of longhaul flights, and being a holiday weekend not too many travelling HON Circle passengers either. I spent some time catching up on messages and work before grabbing a light meal in the restaurant area.

The food was great as was the wine. I held off eating more. Still no sign of the person I was hoping to meet, so I went back to the computer and switched to bubbles. Tonight there were 4 champagnes available so I sampled them all.

A few more people had arrived but the lounge was still fairly empty with more staff than passengers.

Shortly before boarding was due I packed up and hobbled out to the gate, which was in the B20s area (ie very close).
