As for the OP's main question, he'd save a lot of $ by just flying T+ return and use the money saved on a single flight for a UA mileage run ex-DTW or even one back to YVR for a quick turnaround ($204 seems to be the new base, all in YYZ-YVR T+ fare). Or fly Latitude and use NAUs or SWUs, though no COS will be given for the upgrade. But note as others have advised, even if you paid Exec fare and your segment(s) between YYZ=YXU are in economy, you'll only get the minimum 500 SMs with no COS to 750.
