Or just book an AA flight across the Atlantic. Those will depart from LHR T3 and make the easiest connection experience. Alternatively a BA flight from T5, not quite as seamless, but still not bad.

Confirmed. It is the longest segment that gets applied to all legs (e.g. you fly LHR-JFK(F)-LAX(F)-LHR(Y) then you pay Y avios for the entire itinerary.

But good luck trying this in practice...

No, they went to the front of the line 1/2 queue and jumped ahead of everyone else in Group 1. Groups 4/5 are actually quite well segregated in CPT because they board from the other side of the gate.
