I was an exchange student when I was 17 and flew multiple times BUF-JFK-BRU and never had any problems at all, though this was back in the mid '80s.

No reason to take a connex (unless of course you're looking for more miles) on the flight. The CRJ-900 in this case is fine. I wouldn't want to fly it TALT, but for this its fine.
