Because FL served so many cities out of DEN, I'll speed the guessing up a little bit by ruling out states. The flight's last landing was not in Colorado, Wyoming, or Montana.

We've ruled out the 727-100/200 and the 737 (which DL did not fly in 1973, anyway).

I'm pretty sure DL's DC-9-10s were gone by 1973, so that leaves a DC-8-50 as my next guess.
