I don't think there's any solution here. Back in the days when there were multiple JFK departure, they could do so but now given it's 1X daily, you really have to wait until check-in opens around 9p.

The flight (both direction) is mostly empty in Y/PEY, so if saving Avios is your concern, I would go ahead and book Y. Sometimes PEY is more filled than Y which makes it even less comfortable, IMO.

Correct. But for non-hub routes $0 EXP will yield some upgrades over PP and Plat. Those who BIS to Plat Pro or use e500 are more frustrated probably.
