I never understood why a hotel would have such a late (6pm) cancel allowance. It is certainly not in its interest to risk committing a room to someone who isn't committing back.

Totally agree. "Go buy me some blankets from Harrod's!" C'mon. The hotel took a loss on this customer (I doubt they'd characterize him as much of a 'guest'). Gives other award-stayers a bad name.
