Pretty much every flight to/from LGW is catered at LGW. I seem to remember that the early morning flights to LGW are catered ex LGW as well, just kept frozen at outstation. I've no clue about LHR...

The time downroute depends on flight time, frequency and time change. Some are a night stop (20 hours) and some are longer. No duties on the ground apart from being well rested for the return flight....
