I believe most are overreacting, as a 1K prior to conversion I was not upgraded out of SEA and every seat was filled. The OP's offer most likely was a buyup to the next instant upgrade fare of Y/B/M....

Once booked you can also bring up the seating...

Once booked you can also bring up the seating chart and select a seat in FC and it will then take you to the screen with options to Pay, use SWU/CR1's or miles.

I have had about 4 flights this year which were out of sync, some starting with CO metal and Some with UA, never had an issue with either and always been upgraded regardless.
