No more splitting PNRs to get on the upgrade list?

Recently noticed when checking in and getting added to the upgrade list that the reservation doesn't seem to split until the upgrade actually clears... anyone else have this experience?

It's a single-gate airport with two flights a day, and TSA is open just for those two flights.
