This was not our experience. We flew ATL-SJC in Feb 2017 and all medallions were upgraded both ways. There were even some empty first class seats.

I have redeemed my points twice by calling in the past month without any problem. Just be careful that the CSR redeems in $400 increments, as they will try to redeem for the whole amount instead.
