I really wouldn't discount the buses as an alternative to flights. They're very comfortable, you get "fed" (bring snacks,) and you only lose an evening while saving on airfare and hotel for a night....

I would do 3 nights in El Calafate, 3 nights in Mendoza, and 4 nights in Buenos Aires. In fact, you could even move a night from Mendoza to Buenos Aires (everyone probably won't agree with that.)...

As a follow-up, everything ended up fine and on time. We even changed to an earlier flight back to BA (there's only so much to do in Calafate) for a nominal fee.
