Keep in mind that it is only $25 for short haul flights and cost more for others. $35 for medium haul (example: SFO-DAL/ORD/DEN) and $50 for long haul.

You probably didnt get the upgrade because MCS was indeed full however maybe that person missed the flight. You have to let the agent at the gate know you would like to be placed on the standby list...
