I think you can ask the to apply the RUC only to the JFK/LAX segment. I've done this with international flights when I got upgraded only for the domestic portion with the free upgrade.

Check only for the longer segment. I have had luck booking ATL/NRT and then wait listing the shorter segment. Even if you don't clear the shorter segment, at last you have the long haul.
