Thanks for the feedback above, all good advice. We'll book direct with Avis and save ourselves a fair amount of cash which we can waste on enjoying ourselves and spending the kids inheritance lol....

I believe that if you are on separate tickets then BA will not check baggage through to your final destination. You will have to collect your baggage at ORT/JNB and then check in with your baggage...
