On the Big Island there's a camping ground at the Volcano national park that has cabins for something like $30-50 a nite. They're bunk beds, but it does the trick.

When I was there a few years ago, even the locals were talking about how expensive the ferries were getting. hobarthoney is right, though - the horrible exchange rate doesn't help us any these days.
