I prefer MSP as I only need one connection to get back to YYZ. IN addition, the 757 is way better than the 737 they fly to SLC. They usually leave at a gate close to the F Skyclub in MSP, so good...

I have not booked extra seat on Delta before, but have on Air Canada and it requires calling in. As others have said, it's usually cheaper to book a first class seat, especially for domestic travels...
