as supermike briefly mentions, i feel that the upgrade for points at the airport (esp. cph) lately has changed the situation somewhat. in my experience it seems that this has made it harder to get the op-ups, as they would know that there's often a few around with heeps of points considering upgrading anyway.. last times flying out of cph i've overheard quite a few disappointed fellow fflyers trying or having tried to get an op-up, but having to "pay" for it if it's gonna happen...

any similar experiences?

cheers.

Regarding upgrades, I am travelling as EBG to EWR in middle of july, good campaign fare, however especially outward flight CPH-EWR, did not have many seats left in Y to choose from, actually I have never been upgraded, so I really wonder a bot how it works, should I mention/ask for upgrade, I am flying GOT-CPH-EWR, or maybe ask in Scandinavian lounge, or is it just to be patient and wait until gate??. Is it any god asking , or will they maybe just offer you upgrade to E+ or C ??.

The way this has worked for me, I have just asked at the gate if they are doing any gold upgrade on this flight. As long as there are not too many people using upgrade coupons or C is highly booked, it has worked for me. Last summer, no problem at all but it could be that they are getting stingier on this now that more people know about the points/coupon upgrade option.

I had good luck on my BKK trip last weekend...

SK973 CPH-BKK - Economy Extra
SK972 BKK-CPH - Business Class

Original ticket was a cheapo W fare. Earlier this year I had a few upgrades from H or W too:

SK972 BKK-CPH - Business Class
SK945 ARN-ORD - Business Class
SK904 EWR-ARN - Business Class
SK1710 CPH-HEL - Business Class

Question: Where did you get the upgrade? At BKK check-in or at the BKK gate?

BKK check-in - but I arrived there about five minutes before end of check-in... Looked like they only had standbys and non-revs left to be checked in. Earlier it was at BKK check-in too after I volunteered for the bump but they didn't need me.

They were paging lots of pax at gate as well and had a pile of new boarding passes ready as I got there.

Hmm, isnt ARN-EWR operated with the A330-300 (or did they start using the 340 just lately)? The difference between the A340 and A330 is huge when it comes to performance and sounds

Yup, it looks like the days of plentiful op ups is over. Have just done 4 segments as a BD*G, including a CPH-ORD overbooked in Y, and I think they managed to resolve the overbook situation by pushing the 10k/30k Eurobonus points upgrade (just a shame I couldn't use UA or BD miles for it...)

The points-for-upgrade on day of departure does seem like a good idea though, and I hope other *A airlines follow suit.

Here are my last SK flights

April 21. CPH-ORD Economy Extra, Op up
May 4. CPH-ORD Economy Extra, used 10.000 points, got 14 B, they blocked out A
May 9. EWR-CPH Business, Op up (as usual...Newark lounge girls rule!)
May 13. CPH-ORD Economy for the first time since the Airbus came!!

I want to tell you about my experience on Friday May 13th.. At check in at OSL, they told me the flight was oversold and to contact the gate as soon as i landed.

I expected an Op up

Headed out to the US flight area and got in line.

They were calling up for people to do denied boarding and a lot of young people agreed to wait one day for 300/600 euro, hotel and food. At the same time they were upgrading people to C on points Didnt make sense.

I was behind two Danes, dont know their status, the lady said C was almost full, but if they wanted to wait, they might upgrade on points. I said I wanted to do the same. We all sat down, and after 5 minutes, the first guy cleared. They both boarded, I guess the other guy gave up. So I waited and 15 minutes before departure time, a seat cleared! I walked up to the counter, and the lady said she had to go onboard the plane and ask the other guy if he wanted the seat. After 10 minutes she came back, of course he wanted the seat.

There were only 2 people left, me and a young girl with no status and a "seat at gate" boarding pass. She got the ugraded guys seat and we boarded together. To my surprise, she got a seat in Economy Extra, no status, no points!!

I headed to my seat 32F, next to a family with an infant with no seat!!

I got up and went to the front of the plane and waited for the boarding personnel to come. I pulled him aside and told him what happened. He said he was very sorry and the only thing I could do was to write SAS....

The flight I usually take from OSL-CPH lands at 14:30, an hour before the ORD flight, it takes 15 minutes to get from B term to C, through passport control. By the time I got there, the upgrades and moving around was already almost done. And there were a lot of EBS and non status upgraded on points.

I always thought they knew about incoming EBGs and they waited to do all moves until they had arrived. I guess not.

In SKs defence, this has never happened to me before, that GA needs to clean planes for a month.

Well Oliver2002, you certainly had plenty of spare time on your hands to dig up this thread which is almost 3 years old.

But thanks for bumping it up as it brings back the good old memories of the days when SAS was still a quality airline with a caring and appreciative attitude towards its pax. ^

I just think he was sick of the multiple new threads asking about op-ups.

What's the pecking order for Operational Upgrades?

Eg. would an EBS be considered above a Star Alliance Gold?
