Scandinavian Airlines upgrades Economy Extra on long-haul routes

SAS Scandinavian Airlines has upgraded its premium economy class, Economy Extra,
on its long-haul route network. The service class, which is aimed at both
business travelers and discerning leisure travelers, now has dedicated crew, an
improved meal service and an enhanced attention to detail.

"Constant improvement is important in our ambition to keep Economy Extra at the
leading edge of the airline industry," says Gunilla Ait El Mekki, Director
Product Concepts, SAS International. "We are continuously reviewing our product
offerings and we felt it was natural to upgrade certain in-flight aspects. We
have focused both on the quantity and quality of food, as well as how we present
it."

"Economy Extra is a unique selling point for SAS, and is a service class that
attracts both business travelers and leisure travelers wanting an alternative to
Economy," says Lars Sandahl Sørensen, Chief Executive Officer, SAS
International. "Economy Extra offers our customers a wide range of superior
benefits, such as Business class check-in; bigger, wider and more comfortable
seats; audio/video-on-demand; and a more attentive service. It is therefore key
for us to continuously review our product offering to ensure it is a class of
its own."

The recent Economy Extra upgrade, which was introduced 1 February, 2008,
includes improved quality of ingredients and the introduction of new starters
and desserts. Passengers now receive a larger meal tray, with an Orrefors
wineglass, and a larger second meal service.

Scandinavian Airlines introduced Economy Extra in 2002 on all long-haul routes.
Compared to Economy class, Economy Extra passengers enjoy wider (47cm/18"), more
comfortable seats with almost a metre (38") of legroom in a separate cabin.
Customers can check in at Business class counters and are eligible for Fast
Track security (where available), as well as priority boarding. Passengers are
also entitled to greater baggage allowance, both for check-in and an additional
piece of hand luggage to take onboard.

Onboard, Economy Extra passengers receive a pre-departure drink; a cocktail and
snack; a three-course dinner and coffee/tea with liqueurs; drinks, fruit and
cold snacks between meals; and a meal prior to landing. All Economy Extra
passengers also receive a comfort kit and a personal water bottle.

It is the second time in a year that they announce that they have improved Y+ on long haul. And I thought it was decent already! ^

I made some adaptations to the press release, this is of course me writing and is not endorsed by SAS in anyway... take it as a parody

SAS Scandinavian Airlines Group has downgraded its punishment tourist class, Economy, on its European route network. The service class, which is aimed at both business travelers with stingy yet realistic corporate accountants and normal leisure travelers, now has dedicated crew, no meal service and no attention to detail whatsoever. Please note that to the meal service has been substituted the meal selling concept.

"Constant downgrading is important in the ambition to keep Economy at the
leading lower edge of the airline industry," says ranskis, now occasional traveler on gamla SAS Nya Europaflyget. "I am continuously reviewing the product offerings and I felt it is natural for SAS to downgrade certain in-flight aspects. They have focused both on the higher prices and lower quality of food, as well as how they sell it."

"Economy Extra Europe is a unique selling point for SAS, and is a service class that attracts both lucky business travelers and very wealthy leisure travelers wanting an escape from the punishment Economy," could say some enlightened SAS officials. "Economy Extra Europe offers our customers a wide range of superior benefits, such as Business class check-in; bigger, same normal economy seats; and some kind of service. It is therefore key
for us to continuously review our product offering to ensure it is a class of
its own, by always downgrading the economy class to create such a difference between both classes"

Great stuff. This is exactly what Extra customers have been missing. Let's see if the FAs follow thru this time.

A report would be nice. My next SAS flight in Extra is in May, I'm sure one one of our members will try it before?

I'm in IAD about to board SK926 in Y, and since it's Feb. 1st, I suppose the upgraded Economy Extra should be in operation. If so I'll report tomorrow.

I was on SK976 on Jan 27 and there was champagne if you aksed for it in a 0.2l bottle I think. Don't remember the brand (smth "Nicholas xxx" maybe) and it tasted decent. Food to me was nothing special - not bad & not great - and it all came on one tray and nothing like 3-course was served yet but then it wasn't Feb 1st yet. I'm going back CPH-BKK on Feb 9 and will also see if smth has changed and report back on it.

While I think the seat is decent I would love it if they could make the leg rest go up a bit further. Now that would make it even better. One thing I wanted to say though it may not matter to most is that as a very infrequent SK flyer (mostly on SQ or if I have to on LH) I found the blankets in Eco Extra (blue white ones) to be the best I have ever received on a flight (except in F). None of that thin stuff that almost electricutes you.

No upgraded Economy Extra on SK926 today. Only standard sized single serve meals and no pre-departure drinks. Crew did not have any knowledge of when new meals and service would be in effect.

So I can't really report on the new product. Sorry.

Nicolas Feuillatte. SKs standard Champagne, exept for Business Class on intercontinental flights where they serve Henriot (at the moment do SAS serve the 1999 vintage)

Disappointing, but not surprising.. Let's keep the thread alive and see how long it will take before it's February 1st in SAS's mind
